Around 50 automobiles have been smeared with what appears to be blood from a person in the Germany's town of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to authorities.
Vehicles, exterior walls and postal boxes were marked, sometimes with swastikas, they announced in a release.
Law enforcement say they were contacted late on Wednesday night, when a individual noticed that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish-hued fluid.
The substance had been placed in the shape of a banned symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then found numerous other vandalized cars and building exteriors in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are illegal in Germany under regulations banning the public exhibition of Nazi symbols.
Law enforcement say initial examinations suggest the liquid was most likely blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; investigators are not yet informed of any injuries in relation with the event," they added.
Local authorities said they were working "to unravel the case" and have appealed to the community for tips.
A senior political figure stated the incident left him stunned and had to be addressed promptly.
"This incident affects the core of Hanau and reawakens the wounds of the extremist attack five years ago," he wrote on a platform, recalling the murder of nine people by a shooter aiming at people of immigrant origin in February 2020.
