Astronaut Reveals Emotional Distress Following Deluge of Backlash Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her battle with depression after enduring a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – known as a researcher and activist – was part of the brief journey to space earlier this year, which also included celebrity crewmates.
The mission was heavily criticized by some, who cited its expense and carbon footprint.
Reflecting on the ordeal, the astronaut, who made history as the pioneer for her community, stated the negative reaction eclipsed her moment under an torrent of sexist abuse.
“I explained the depression could persist for a long time,” the astronaut shared in a public message, describing a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the aftermath of the flight.
She characterized the subsequent media coverage and social media frenzy as an barrage beyond typical human coping.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she confessed. “Even a month on, a phone call ended with me hanging up, weeping uncontrollably.”
Eclipsed by Backlash
The researcher, who has conducted studies in female health science and operated research during the flight, said everything she had worked for – including her scientific research and years of training to the historic significance of her background – was buried under the tide of sexist vitriol.
She is widely recognized for her groundbreaking advocacy fighting for justice for survivors of assault.
Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was deferred after an attack during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
In the time since achieving her goal, she reports that the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she acknowledged the followers whose support were her lifeline. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that even with the backlash, considerable good had emerged from the experience, such as elevated attention for her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The fully automated New Shepard rocket departed its launch site in the spring, carrying the all-female team on a 11-minute journey that passed the Kármán line of space.
The group of women also comprised leaders in different industries.
The company behind the mission is a private space firm founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
